Writing for the Web
Introduction
A good thing is to purchase a domain, subdomains and e-mail addresses and forward it all to a server that will host the content of your web site.
Setting up a Domain
When you purchase a domain, it means that you are creating a name to your web site, or an ID for example, that redirects people to your web site.
Let's say that you bought the domain www.yourname.com. It means that every time that someone types this address in their browser, it will automaticaly access the main page of your web site on the hosting server.
Purchasing a domain name
- Look for a provider. Example:www.godaddy.com
- Type in the domain name of your choice. The next page that appears should tell you if the domain is avaliable or not.
- Select the option of domain that you want.
- You will most likely be asked if you want to purchase more services, such as server type, hosting and its capacity, etc.
Choosing a Web Hosting Provider
Most domain providers will give you the option to host your web site with tem. Look for the ones that offer you discounts for the bundle (domain/hosting). Also pay attention to the sctruture of the company. Do a little research on the company's name and reputation. As I mentioned above, www.godaddy.com is a very good service provider.
Things to look for when choosing a web hosting provider
- Up to date technologies. (SSI for example)
- Storage Capacity
- Speed. (how fast can you download or upload from or to the server.)
- FTP access
- technical support availability
